Homeless Programs Awash in Cash…Good News?
The United States Government and California State Legislature are throwing billions of dollars at the problem of people living without homes. This seems wonderful. More funding to help people is clearly a good idea. But, what are we doing to end homelessness?
Are we building enough housing? Do we know where to put the housing for everyone who needs it? Have we begun to solve the problems of life that lead to despair, joblessness and homelessness for people? Do we talk honestly about these problems?
I wonder if we can find the right rooms (or zooms), to really sit down and answer the hard questions. I wonder if we can come together to find places to build housing for all who need it. I wonder if we can agree collectively on the size of our communities, the mix of incomes, and commit to caring for each other so there is no one who lives without a home and no one goes hungry and basic needs are met for all.
Will the promise of new funding for “infrastructure” teach us how to better agree on solutions?
